Brothers Su-Kyun Shin and Jay Shin have been chopping, rolling, spritzing and steaming all sorts of goodies for over 50 years combined. In fact, Chef Jay was voted top sushi chef in Lancaster, PA, and between the two of them they've been doing their culinary thing throughout New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Virginia.
After moving to Milford, they finally realized their dream of opening their very own sushi place at the beach, just south of Rt. 9/404 on the west side of Coastal Highway in the old Barista Cafe in Lewes. It's most certainly a family affair up there in Lewes, with
There's nothin' like a fresh, warm bagel. So many transplants tell me how they mourn the loss of their favorite bagel joint in their home towns. New Yorkers wax rhapsodic over H&H. Suburban Marylanders sob quietly over the loss of Bagel City in Rockville (oh, the twists!). Former Philadelphians bicker over who's the best: Four Worlds Bakery, Philadelphia Bagel Co. or South Street Bagels -- among others. But when the sobbing, bickering and waxing subsides, everybody agrees (at least so far) that Surf Bagel in Lewes satisfies their yeasty, crunchy cravings. And, as a former denizen of Rockville who stood in line many an hour to snag a bag of Bagel City's finest, I agree.
Former Maryland firefighter (and inveterate surfer) Dave Vitella created Surf Bagel to combine two of his most
Well, there's good news and not quite so good news. The good news is that the reincarnation of the Rose & Crown in Lewes' boutique Hotel Rodney is headed up by none other than James Beard nominated Chef Jay Caputo. The not-quite-so-good news for the young restaurant is that the reincarnation of the Rose & Crown in Lewes' boutique Hotel Rodney is headed up by none other than James Beard nominated Chef Jay Caputo. Why not-so-good? Simply because the new Rose & Crown must be held to a higher standard. And the emails I've received since they opened attest to
There aren't many better views of the Delaware Bay than from the Lewes Teminal of the Cape May-Lewes Ferry. It always seemed sort of wasted, because there wasn't much to do out on the dock other than to get yourself onto the ferry or order something yukky that was sure to be heated-up in a microwave. The Ferry Powers-That-Be have changed all that with the addition of On The Rocks, a fun little bar and entertainment venue right smack on the dock, facing the Cape and the expanse of the bay.
Let's get one thing straight: This is not fine dining. It's straight-ahead bar food (with a few notable high points). Everything is cooked fresh when you order it (even if it's frozen) so nothing's

(Click to make reservations through OPEN TABLE.com.) In the 1940s and early '50s, the building at 329 Savannah Road was, in fact, a filling station. The progression of years saw a dry cleaner, a florist and a host of restaurants. Apparently the various eateries had one thing in common: They all served breakfast.
Co-owners Joe Zuber and Darryl Ciarlante chose to build on the gas station theme, so family, friends and loyal customers filled the place with automotive memorabilia from basements, attics and treasured collections. The result is a bright and engaging interior with something to
GoBrit! owner Alison Blyth is no stranger to Rehoboth Beach dining. This seasoned restaurateur is responsible for the storied La La Land (and its magical bar), as well as the pan-Asian flavored Yum Yum (both long gone). Her authentic fish + chip shop, GoFish!, is just steps from the Rehoboth Beach boardwalk and is always busy.
It's no secret that it can be a challenge for Lewes residents, visitors and highway dwellers in general to brave the
The Lewes installation of Pat's Pizza now occupies the space next to Bling Salon and Spa where the old Five Guys used be be. They have over 50 locations in DE, NJ, MD and PA, and word on the street is that
Bob Ciprietti and his partners have completed work on the new Touch of Italy bakery in Five Points, the newest TOI on Coastal Highway is under construction, and the downtown Lewes location continues to pack 'em in. Case in point: I try to schedule my review visits in such a way that I can go a few times during the season and also the off-season, giving me a better idea of how places adjust their
