Only the Strong Survive

There's a lot of restaurant competition here in Rehoboth Beach. Some places are just OK, most are pretty good, and a few are exceptional. I promise you honesty and objectivity, so check out the reviews and ratings, then post your own opinions. Click any Ratings at a Glance box to see how we figure the ratings.

Rehoboth Beach Reviews - American/Traditional

Click for how we figure the ratingsThe demise of the old Cosmopolitan Grill is old news, and is best left for future generations to untangle. The good news is that original Eden owner and long-time Salt Air bartender Rob Stitt has teamed up with local bartender (and dyed-in-the-wool surfer) Matt Sprenkel to resurrect the attractive spot. Both Rob and "Sprenkles" have a long history here in Rehoboth Beach. Blue Moon Executive Chef Lion Gardner was Rob's sous chef at the original Eden, and, at this point, Rob still owns Bayside Barbecue near Pot Nets in Long Neck.

Rob and his girlfriend Catherine ("Cat") have repainted the front dining room to make it

Click for how we figure the ratingsOne of my fondest memories as a tiny, not-yet- fully-formed Foodie was gliding to the beach in the back seat of the gigantic black and white Buick in anticipation of a fun breakfast. (I was an equal-opportunity anticipator; happily looking forward not only to breakfast, but also lunch, dinner, pizza and/or Taylor Pork Roll on the boardwalk, and maybe a funnel cake.)

Whether it was the long-gone Schumann's in Wildwood, N.J. (in the shadow of the glittering and futuristic Satellite Motel); English's Diner or the Majestic Hotel Coffee Shop in Ocean City, MD; Lyle's in

Click to see how we figure the ratingsSometimes good stuff turns up in the most unlikely places. For example, who wooda thought that you'd find an amazing crabcake at Woody's East Coast Bar & Grill in Dewey Beach? Not that I expected anything bad, but it's such an unassuming little spot, tucked into a tiny strip center with Vavala's Beach Things and a Post Office.

After many emails urging me to try the place, one of my favorite Foodettes finally took action: She told me to get

Ratings110_Primohoagies3Just when you think there are just enough subs / heros / grinders / hoagies in town, somebody throws a new twist into the mix. This time that twist comes from the Philadelphia-based sandwich ... oops, Hoagie ...  shop newly ensconced in the last little strip center on the right at the end of Rehoboth Avenue, just before you merge onto Coastal Highway.

The owner has another of these little joints in

Tornado_Fries_Guy_with_productTornado Fries' second franchise location (the first is in Wildwood, New Jersey) has opened here in Rehoboth Beach. What a cute concept (and it's tasty, too!).

I worry about the place, however. Even though they're in the ocean block of Rehoboth Ave., they're set way back in that old art gallery space at the end of a long hallway, between E.C. Shades and Snyder's Candy. The good news is that they've got a brightly colored awning, lots of big signs and photos/videos of the product out front, so let's hope people get the message. That long hallway is actually kind of fun, with a couple of claw machines and an Italian water ice stand.

A Tornado Fry is a simple yet wonderful thing. A long, baking style potato is

I've said it before and I'll say it again: The food biz can be

The Gelato Gal has situated herself out on the west side of Coastal Highway where Rehoboth Avenue meets Rt. 1, just south of the big white Coldwell Banker building. Jot down these directions, because the gelato there is truly unlike any I've ever had (your Foodie has slurped a lot of gelato in his time).

Truth be told, I went in there with the intention of finding

Click for how we figure the ratingsIt's been a long time since sunlight flowed into the old abandoned Cultured Pearl space at 19 Wilmington Avenue in Rehoboth Beach. In the last few months, however, veteran restaurateur Tony Nomikos has completely transformed the space. Everything is new. In the middle of construction, when he told The Foodie that

Click for how we figure the ratingsWhen asked to name the most difficult part of being a food critic, celebrated reviewer Ruth Reichl answered, "Having to write about a restaurant I know I won't like." Well, I'm certainly not Ruth (though I might look pretty spiffy in that big picture-hat), but I cannot tell a lie: I visited Rigby's a couple of times early last year, and my experiences were less than satisfactory. So rather than subject myself to a third visit, I put it on the back burner. And there it stayed.

Then I started getting emails from site visitors (and even the nice people at Rigby's) telling me that they had revamped and cleaned up the place, brought in a

Click for how we figure the ratingsI'd like to thank all the Foodie fans who made me feel guilty for not getting around to this tucked-away piece of the Caribbean. This season's openings, closings, reopenings, remodelings (and possible openings) on Wilmington Avenue have been keeping us busy. But we finally made it. And for the most part, we're better for it.

Like other "theme" places here at the beach, Zogg's is an

Click for how we figure the ratingsYup, that's a "9.5" alright. It means "just about perfect." So far we've only awarded a couple of these to the over 130 restaurants we've reviewed. We went back several times, desperate to find something wrong, and we failed each time. (Well, OK, the setting sun does sometimes get in your eyes when you sit by the windows that look out onto the bay.) The soft, live piano music didn't hurt, either.

The festivities begin with a basket of simple but fresh

Click for how we figure the ratingsThe menu at Stoney Lonen cites an old Irish quote: "...when in Ireland, You are always close to the sea." Well, the menu is certainly loaded with seafood dishes, steaks and Irish goodies, and the proximity to the sea goes without saying. The restaurant occupies a colorful, yet unassuming building on Second St. at the corner of Wilmington Ave. in Rehoboth Beach where the original

It's no secret that Betty's Pure and Simple has had its ups and downs over the past year or so. Personally, I feel that much of the hubbub is due to owner Matt Haley's clever, but perhaps skewed, branding of the restaurant. He went for the "Mel's Diner" look and menu, and that's all well and good, except that people associate that sort of thing with $3.95 hamburgers the size of your head and a $4.95 mountain of meatloaf.

Well, the look may be "diner," but the menu was (and still is) more upscale, with quality (read: higher cost) ingredients. My favorite Foodie/Psychotherapist would call this

Click for how we figure the ratingsFor years, that sunny corner at First and Wilmington was called the Kannery, where the mom and the boys dished up OK subs, burgers and sandwiches. That is, of course, until George and Soula Vrentzos and their daughter Irene opened the Corner Grille in that very same spot. George was a chef in fine dining restaurants for most of his life, and even within the limitations of a beachy sandwich shop, his

Click for how we figure the ratings(note UPDATE below) Welcome Cypress! This restaurant is the latest in the parade of eateries to occupy that storied building at 37 Wilmington Avenue in Rehoboth Beach. Square One, Yum Yum, Shag, Atlantic Jazz Yard--they all flamed-out for one reason or another. I'm sure that Bethany Beach builder/developer Ken Heaps hopes that his Cajun-flavored Cypress doesn't follow suit. The Foodie shares that sentiment.

The decor hasn't changed very much since
