Rehoboth Beach Reviews - Italian

Click for how we figure the ratingsI've read some other reviews of this restaurant that faulted the service (and attitude), but so far, our experiences in that department have been OK.

We interrupt this review for a special report:........

UPDATE: OK, right to the point: Our last visit to Zebra was a disaster. But there were some good points that I have to tell you about too. I began to suspect something was amiss when it took over a half-hour to get our appetizers out of the kitchen. Through it all, our server was delightful, and you could tell she was as distressed as we were. But it wasn't over yet! Things went from bad to worse when it took over an hour (70 minutes, to be exact) for our entrees to arrive for our party of four. (This, from a restaurant with an entree price-point in the $30s!) I made it clear that we were not hungry anymore, and that they should bring our check. This (finally) got the manager's attention, and after a little negotiating and arm-twisting on their part we allowed them to bring the entrees. To his credit, the manager made acceptable concessions on the check, and if it had not been for our server (she was the essence of diplomacy and patience) we would have stormed out a lot earlier. Sadly, after we had filled up on wine and bread, the food we ended up eating was delicious--but you pay for a lot more than food in a restaurant like that. An adjacent table of 4 (unsuspecting vacationers who sat down when we did) went through the same thing--they were thoroughly disappointed, and were still eating their entrees when we left. I lowered the service and overall ratings accordingly, though it is no reflection on the server. This was a kitchen and management blunder.

Now back to our program already in progress...

The menu at Zebra is interestingly arranged, with pasta plates and salad-based goodies on the left, and more elaborate meat/fish dishes on the right. One of the things I like about the left side of the menu is that they offer the pasta plates in half and whole portions. I had the half-portion of the tortellini with peas and prosciutto in a rich, creamy sauce. Though my main course was OK (more about that later), images of those little peas and the crispy, thin-as-air slices of prosciutto still haunt me. I'm getting the whole portion of the tortellini next time.

Not that the veal wasn't good! Pounded out bigger and thinner than any scallopini I've ever seen, I could only conclude that the sous chef had some anger issues to work out. I'm glad he took it out on that thin, crispy, lean piece of veal. The version I ordered was lightly breaded and topped with a salad mixture. Frankly, I could have done without the warm lettuce. What were they thinking!?!

ANOTHER UPDATE: On another visit, I complained about the warm lettuce debacle (referred to above) and the server brought the salad portion of the dish in a cool stainless steel ramekin that kept the salad cold. I combined bites of the veal and the greens and the counterpoint of the cool salad against the warm veal was perfect. So, if you order any of the things that are topped with the salad, be sure to ask for the salad on the side, unless, of course, you like warm, slippery lettuce.

Others at the table got a veal dish with cheese and sauce (the closest they come to veal parmesan without actually calling it that), and a ribeye steak dish that reminded me of steak pizzaiola. Next time I'm getting that veal dish--any veal dish--without a warm, slippery topping of lettuce.

Downscale it is not. Even on that humid evening, patrons were in long pants and collared shirts. Note that they also have a wonderful wraparound porch where patrons can enjoy dining al fresco. Word around town is that if you want a quiet dining experience, especially in the high season, you reserve a table close to the bar toward the front. Apparently, people who can't control their children are relegated toward the back. If that is indeed the case, I admire Zebra for doing it.

They are at 32 Lake Avenue directly across from StingRay. Click here to see their menu. They are closed in the off-season. You can call them at 302-226-1160. (D., Bar) Price Range: Expensive +.

I decided to take my mother to Ristorante Zebra for Mother's Day this year. Despite the fact that I know the food is always good at Zebra, I hesitated to dine there because it's always so noisy. Unfortunately, my instincts were right - the waitstaff initally sat us in the back room of the restaurant - half empty but music blaring and two babies screaming. It seems as though every time I dine there my experience is always ruined by screaming kids.
The food was a delight, as expected. Fetttucini carbonara for an appetizer was mouth watering. Our veal dishes were superb.
My advice is: Don't go unless you reserve a table in the front room closest to the bar area, or sit on the patio. Otherwise, its not worth spending this kind of money on a fine dining experience only to have it ruined by a noisy atmosphere.
My advice to Zebra - figure out how to accommodate parties with kids, and not insult the rest of your well-paying customers.

I love the food at Zebra! I am Italian so I can be very critical of restaurants who think they can cook good Italian food! The Veal Marsala is my favorite. I was there Saturday night and while it was delicious, I would suggest that they salt their food during the cooking process.I seldom use salt, but had to salt my dinner. The dressing on the Caesar Salad was a bit bland for my taste. I prefer the oil based dressing rather than the cream. I also prefer sitting out on the porch because it is entirely too noisy inside. I often come home with a headache if I eat indoors. Even though I love the food, I think the attitude of the staff/owners is absolutely obnoxious. They act as though they are doing me a favor by allowing me to eat there. Also, it irks me that the least expensive glass of wine is $10.00 and the pour is very stingy! So,when I go to the Zebra for my Italian "fix", I have to promise my husband, that I will not complain about the service and attitudes!

At a table of 3, I was overwhelmed with the rush of the meal and the incompetent staff which kept bringing out food when we specifically asked that they not hurry us. Food was great, but no ambiance at all and the room was not full, but the staff kept moving in and out and dropping things, I just wanted to shout, "Give us some space and chill out. Let us dine in peace without someone hanging over us!" This was my first time here and I have never experienced this kind of service. It will take me a while to recoup.

I can go to a high-priced restaurant, get great food -- and be served within the hour ... unless the restaurant is Zebra. I had the same experience with a wait and I saw numerous other people with the same problem on a recent visit. There's something wrong in the kitchen, and it's not the food. They simply cannot get the food out on time (it's summer season!!) and they make kindergarten excuses on top of it. This is unprofessional and simply not worth the money, if you ask me. It's an insult to places like The Back Porch (who does it right, on time and with style) to cut Zebra too much slack.

This place is a mess! They're living on their old reputation from the early 90s when they were one of Rehoboth's "go to" restaurants. While some of the food is very good, particularly the pastas, most is just ok. The service absolutely stinks! There clearly is no one training the young wait staff. I recently watched in disbelief as the waiter filled our wine glasses to the brim. He emptied the entire bottle to four diners in one pour! At these prices, we expect the whole fine dining package. The kitchen clearly is under staffed. We waited almost an hour for our first courses 3 weeks ago and the restaurant was maybe half full. I'm all in to leisurely dining but that's ridiculous. Also, this place needs a gracious and charming host to greet you and to make you feel welcome. Not a bored looking host who exudes snootiness. Give me a break!

Last night (09/18/2010) I had another fabulous meal at Zebra's. The food, the service, and the drinks were wonderful. I have been eating at Zebra's for the past 13 thirteen years and have never had a bad dining experience. The bartender makes the best Cosmopolitans in Rehoboth

We went to Zebra last summer for my husband's birthday. We had a lovely table on the porch. However, we were on that porch for HOURS. It took so long to get our food. Our high school age son and his friend went through several helpings of bread before the appetizers came. There was no special service at all and at a price point of at least $30/entree, a little extra is expected. The food was fine, but nothing special. Skip it and go to Espuma where you will pay the same amount, but each bite is culinary artwork .

I read the reviews and had to double check if I was reading about the same restaurant that we enjoy. Every experience at Zebras has been a pleasant tasteful one. In fact the staff has no attitude when we are there and accommodate our requests flawlessly. I am second generation italian decent and my girlfriend is first so for us to go to an italian restaurant you can bet wears very picky. When she licked her plate clean, ribbion pasta with truffle oil, I knew we had ha winner in Zebra's. Well that was three years ago and we still are going. Is it expensive, yes, but I believe in you get what you pay for and the staff and quality of food at Zebra's has always delivered.

The comments here strongly reinforce my impression the last time at the restaurant. The food is really pretty good but not great. The wine service and selection is really very bad. The total service experience is the worst, and I will not go back. I don't really know what they think they are doing at the prices they charge.

Sadly, this restaurant used to be one of the best in town. Over the past 3-4 years, I have seen it go way down hill. Frankly, I don't even waste my time eating there anymore. (The bar is still great) It is way too expensive for what you get (terrible service from the kitchen)and there are way too many wonderful alternatives available. You can test it out yourself, but DON'T DO IT!!

What can I say! We went there for dinner and were rudely greeted at the door. Questioned if we had a reservation (the restaurant was more than half empty). We were rudely told that they didn't feel they could accommodate us. Well with that attitude I fully agree: They can't accommodate us, and I doubt we will be back to try!

Ristorante Zebra did a 50th wedding anniversary for my parents and did a great job serving 12 of us a delicious dinner with a beautiful zebra cake to celebrate the occasion. I still dream about the eggplant appetizer, the asparagus appetizer, and the pasta with porcini mushrooms and truffle oil. I've eaten everywhere in Rehoboth and I'd give Zebra a high rating!
