Rehoboth Beach Reviews - Seafood / Fish Houses

Click for how we figure the ratingsWith all the buzz over Royal Weddings, it just seems right that there should be a little bit of Britain tucked into the south side of Rehoboth Avenue among the ice cream cones, cheesesteaks, T-shirts, taffy, pizza, fudge and corn dogs. And it's just a short waddle from the Boardwalk. go fish! is almost always a treat. Their signature dish is, of course, the English Beer Battered Fish and Chips [pictured, left, with the Caesar option). The white, flaky Cod is filleted right there on the premises and comes out crispy, crunchy and flavorful. The "chips," (OK, french fries, just don't tell them I told you) are hot and tasty. I also like the fish as a sandwich with cole slaw ("The Codfather"). The terminally charming owner, Alison Blyth, claims that her chips are the real thing. go_fish_dinnerNot sure if she means the shape, how they are cooked, or the fact that they come from potatoes, but they are good, nonetheless.

Seveal of my Foodies-at-Large like the "Brighton Beach" (crab cakes), "The Tube" (fish tacos, light crunchy and crispy) and the "Bangers and Mash" (pork sausages with all the fixin's). My favorite dining companion never misses the Mushy Peas (think of a buttery, green pea hummus without garbanzos or tahini). Apparently Alison had to search high and low for the genuine "marrowfat" pea used to make this very British delicacy. When she finally found a source, she bought 3000 pounds of them. I can't help but wonder where she keeps them.

As appetizers, you've got to try the Black and Tan fried onion rings (yup, it's a beer batter, and ask for them well-done) and the Coconut Shrimp. Can't decide on the various types of shrimp? Go for The go_fish_shepherds_pieUltimate Shrimp Appetizer. The name says it all. One of the special treats on the menu is their huge Shepherd's Pie [pictured, right]. The meaty base is deliciously spiced and quite filling. Don't miss it!

goFish_logo_jpg_smallUPDATE! I mentioned in an earlier incarnation of this article that in the past I had had a couple of less-than-perfect meals where the fish was soft and greasy. I've been back quite a few times since then, and, try as I might I just can't get them to bring it out to me any less than perfect. The fish has been moist, and the lightly crispy, flavorful batter lets the mild taste of the cod shine through. About a year ago I whined about the dry sandwich rolls, and the rolls are now completely different; moist and grilled with a touch of butter. I'd love to think they changed because of The Foodie's commentary, but they probably knew the rolls were nasty anyway (I can dream, can't I?). When they're on their game, their fried fish stands up against any other eatery around here. And the whole Limey experience is fun--especially the cool tchotchkes from the London subway.

go fish! is just west of the Boardwalk at 24 Rehoboth Avenue. You can't miss the huge Union Jack. They have lots of deals off season, and they are open all year. Give them a call if you must (302-226-1044) and experience the closest thing to a real British Fish + Chip Shop you'll find in Rehoboth Beach. Click here to see the dinner menu at go fish! (L., D.) I agree with the above comments: ditto. However, for the love of all that is holy, please everyone: order not one, but two, of the TOFFIE PUDDING desserts (made of dates, primarily). This carmelly, gooey traditional English dessert is positively impeccable in every possible way. They are small, so order two...you'll make room!

I have only had one experience with having a less than stellar experience at go fish. The fish was mushy and the batter was greasy. I have dined there many, many times and as a local, have introduced visitors to the restaurant. So, I would still consider it my favorite place for Fish & Chips in the area. I agree with the above comment! The Sticky Toffee Pudding is to DIE for. One should not live without trying one or two ...or ten for that matter. I order it from Alison every time I have a party at my house and it is always a "crowd pleaser!" The calamari appetizer and the crab dip are worth trying as well.

We always wonder how we can forget this wonderful place and always vow to go more often when we get there. Although we often order the fish and chips (consistently good on our visits) the other night some of our group tried the salmon cake and shepherd's pie. They were superb. The atmosphere is always warm and feels "local" even in season. I want to also commend the owners for going green!

I thought it was grossly overpriced. $15.95 for chicken strips and fries? Our bill was over $40 for two of us. I left full, but dissatisfied.

What better fun food than fish and chips in a subway by the ocean. Come on this place is terrific for what it is. Just wish they weren't so stingy with the mushy peas!!!!!!

we go to go fish mostly in the off season and have found most items on the menu to be fine. the atmosphere is friendly whether pick up or dining in. we must admit the prices are a little high for the amount of food given, however, their $10 or so off season specials are worth repeated visits.

While I do love their fish and chips, the Shepherds Pie and Fisherman's Pie are also worthy of a try. These two are wonderfully flavored and definitely very filling! I couldn't help noticing last week that the fish and chips entrees 3 of my fellow diners ordered were considerably smaller than in all previous visits (maybe 15-20 times?), by at least a third. I hope this was a fluke! They were disappointed in the size as each had ordered this several times in the past. Fingers crossed this isn't the new norm.

We visit rehoboth a few times a year and we always visit go fish. My husband tries fish and chips EVERYWHERE and these r by far the best and most authentic...the sticky pudding is great. Other reviewers said they have had mushy fish but we never have,I hope they stay crunchy and moist like they have in the past. We r actually going there this weekend, can't wait.
