On Thursday, March 1, Summerhouse in Rehoboth Beach will generously donate a portion of each dinner check from 5 to 10pm to Sussex Countians living with HIV and AIDS. Jaime Schneider's Food 4 Friends is the food bank in Sussex County bringing help to those who need it.
There will be a silent auction, dinner and DJ dancing. Get a 3-course seafood dinner for $19, cocktails from $5 and beers from $2. Such a deal!
If Food 4 Friends' previous events are any indication, it might be a good idea to call for reservations: 227-3895. Wine, dine and benefit a good cause at Summerhouse next Thursday evening!
Well, the results are in! Today the lease was signed on Touch of Italy's fourth location in the old Ocean Liquors spot next to where Niko's used to be and where the Nage MarketPlace is now being fitted out.
The store will be a duplicate of the Lewes installation at Second and Savannah, with wood-fired pizza ovens, and it will be larger with more seating for diners. It will also have an outdoor patio that will be shared with Nage MarketPlace. Josh Grapski and Bob Ciprietti are discussing a coordinated look for the adjoining properties to draw customers into the little strip center, now dominated by Outlet Liquors and Nage Restaurant.
Congratulations to Bob Ciprietti and Joe Curzi. The Nage/TOI corner will be a fun place to be! You can buy your liquor next door, pick up a pound of Hot Stix at Hickman's, and even get your vacuum cleaner fixed. One Stop Shopping at its best.
The Rehoboth Beach Popeyes located on a pad in the Wal-Mart parking lot is about to change hands, and the new owners plan to take it apart and put it together again. And goodness knows it needs it.
You'd be amazed at the number of "finely tuned palates" (I dare not name names, but that includes some hoity toity chefs and restaurateurs we all know and love) that I've caught red-handed (quite literally) in there. Sometimes you just gotta have it, and hopefully the new proprietors will clean the place up a little (don't forget those nasty bathrooms!!) so we can continue to satisfy the occasional need for a "Four piece, white meat, spicy, with dirty rice" fix.
Not that I'd know....
In true "Where's Waldo" fashion, denizens of Rehoboth Beach thought that the former Nourish healthy-cooking maven (and chef to the stars) Deb Sutter had flown the coop. In fact, rumors of her coop-flying are greatly exaggerated. Deb is alive and well and helping her friend Patty Jacobs in Georgetown at Patty's delightful little carryout named, of all things, Patty's.
Need a Deb fix? Patty's is on Rt. 9 (S. Bedford St.) just west of 16 Mile Brewery. From Georgetown, leave the circle immediately to the left of the Citizen's Bank. From 113 south, turn right on Rt. 9 at the Motor Vehicle Administration. While you're over there, grab some tasty chicken salad and a handful of those cookies (though most of her fans feel that Deb's smile alone is worth the trip).
Well, after her long, comtemplative hiatus, trudging through the snow with her Tibetian guru and searching for herself amongst the Himalayan peaks, The Town Crawler has returned to Rehoboth Beach, a bit frostbitten, but otherwise none the worse for wear. And she's ready to assume the position in front of her beloved IBM Selectric with the multiple font balls and two-color ribbon.
Relive a bit of Christmas past and share the T.C.'s emotional meanderings during a bout of personal Yuletide stress. And it all happens at the Blue Moon. Be transported into her world by clicking here.
Everybody's abuzz about the recent issue involving Summerhouse and alleged discrimination against a customer. There are always two sides to every story, and this one's no different. Check out the article in the Washington Blade (link below), and the comments posted below it by Blade readers in Rehoboth. No matter what the circumstances, the owners have moved to contain the issue, including termination of the offending employee, and publishing a long letter of explanation and clarification in the 2/10/12 Cape Gazette.
For details on the original story, read the article published Friday, Feb. 3 in the Washington Blade:
http://www.washingtonblade.com/2012/02/03/rehoboth-restaurant-guilty-of-anti-gay-bias/
Again, there are obviously extenuating circumstances. I've received over 100 emails from parties on both sides that suggest that very thing, and many (who are gay, by the way) side with Summerhouse. I love the place, and I hope that the Sugrues suceed in nipping this in the bud.

Yes, the rumors are true. The always-seemed-to-be-in-the-weeds Beseme is history (truth be told, we're all probably better off for it). But more history is about to arrive at the Hotel Rodney in Lewes: The Rose & Crown's decidedly British pub grub and fun games will be resurrected in that little Market St. space that was the original home of the Buttery. It's no secret that it was tight in there, and Hotel Rodney owner Jim O'Hare is currently remodeling the lobby/restaurant area to give the place a little more breathing room.
The Rose & Crown (originally owned by Bob Mitchell of 1776 Steakhouse) closed in 2005 after garnering a loyal following over its 20-year run. Standard British fare plus a few Americanized dishes will be offered in the brand new space.
Opening is slated for mid-April, hopefully before Easter. We'll keep you posted, of course.
Big Fish Restaurant Group is working hard to reopen the venerable Salt Air on Wilmington Avenue, growing its list of ventures that include Summerhouse and Big Fish Grill here in Rehoboth Beach.
The Sugrue brothers and their associates plan on keeping Salt Air's popular "picnic" concept successfully put into place by former owner Jonathan Spivak and advisor Matt Haley.
This will bring all sorts of new life to the west end of Wilmington Avenue as Salt Air again joins Henlopen City Oyster House, Confucius, Stoney Lonen and Porcini House on that busy corner.
Touch of Italy is expanding into the Five Points Center, taking over the space formerly occupied by the always-seemed-so-sad Fisher Bay.
Bobby Ciprietti and Joe Curzi tell us that all the bakery operations will be centralized there, opening up additional room at the Lewes location for food service. Check out the recently posted review of the Lewes Touch of Italy.
Look at an even more recent posting above for more info on Touch Of Italy's expansion.
New places include a branch of the Millsboro-based Pizza Palace opening in the former Ledo's space across from Tanger Midway (within waddling distance of the new Panera Bread). A sign verifying that is proudly displayed in the window of Ledo's.
The Charcoal Deli barbecue place over by Gelato Gal is taking over the old Zorba's spot (now Turquoise in Bethany) next to the Food Lion. There's even a window sign to prove it. It's a smart move for the BBQ gals.
We secretly hope that Gelato Gal takes the hint and makes herself more accessible as well. All these gals do a pretty good job, and Gelato Gal's delicious confection is waayyy too good to be hidden in that little strip center.
We are also happily anticipating Alison Blyth's latest venture, Go Brit!, opening in the abandoned Deli 88 space next to the Verizon Store across from Bethany Blues. Let's hope they will be serving that wonderful Shepherd's Pie.
The DE, PA, MD and NJ chain, Pat's Pizzeria, is open for business in the old 5-Guys spot in Lewes next to Bling. Right next door, however, Barista Cafe has closed for good. The people at Bling are sad.
By the way, Lewes pizzaphiles should already know that Lewes Pizza has moved from their Savannah Road location and opened in that uber-beachy little blue house across from the Dairy Queen near Lewes Beach.
The Buzzlette (one of our favorite Foodies-at-Arms) continues to insist that a Buffalo Wild Wings is moving into the Mill Outlet space next to the Home Fitness store. There is yet no hard evidence of that.
Check out the newly formatted Off-Season Specials List!.
You can also access reviews directly from the list just by clicking the restaurant name in the left column. Search by restaurant or by day of the week.
Holiday openings/closings, hours, specials and discounts on breakfast, lunch, happy hour, bar snacks, dinner and late night are included for restaurants up and down the coast, from Ocean City to Dewey Beach to Rehoboth to Lewes, to Milton and up to Milford, plus a few selected gems slightly inland. Click here to check it out.
The heavy equipment's in place and poised to build us our first Panera. Goodness knows it's been a long time coming, but, yes indeed, we will have a Panera Bread right here in Rehoboth Beach.
The new branch of the popular baker, soup, salad and lunch spot will be located on the open piece of land across from Tanger Midway Outlets, directly to the right of the little shopping center where Peppers is, and where the new Pizza Palace will soon be.
We'll keep you posted!
